Studying in Nottingham: What to do and where to stay
Nottingham is one of the UK’s top student cities, with the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University both high in the rankings. The two universities both have several campuses for the 61,000 students that study in the city. If you’re considering studying at either of the city’s universities, read on to find out all you need to know.
What to doWhen it comes to nightlife, Nottingham has a lot on offer. The main student nights are held at clubs like Ocean, Ink, Rock City and Stealth, while there are many bars such as Pitcher and Piano, Das Kino (complete with ping pong tables), the hidden bar Boilermaker and the gothic Pit and Pendulum. The city also has great live music venues such as the Motorpoint arena, The Bodega, Rock City and The Maze. For something more relaxed, the city also has several good theatres and art galleries.
When you arrive in Nottingham, the first thing you should do is hit the main tourist attractions. Home to Robin Hood, you can check out Sherwood Forest for a day outside the city, or visit Nottingham Castle to discover the city’s history. You can also visit the City of Caves for a more unique trip back in time. There is the Galleries of Justice Museum, which will be renamed the National Justice Museum later this year. If museums aren’t your thing, head down to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem – supposedly the oldest pub in Britain! And if that wasn’t enough, check out Wollaton Hall – Lord Byron’s former home which starred in The Dark Knight Rises…
The town centre has a lot on offer for students, with good shopping facilities in the Victoria Centre and Broadmarsh Shopping Centre. Nottingham has a large number of independent restaurants and cafes as well as the big names. For something a bit different, check out the Nottingham Kitty Café – great for students missing their furry pals. There are also some beautiful features, such as the statues of Brian Clough and Robin Hood, and Nottingham Cathedral.
Where to stayWhen it comes to accommodation in Nottingham, there’s a wide range on offer. There are various student areas around Nottingham due to the number of universities and campuses between them, so make sure you research which campus you will be studying at before finding accommodation. If you want to save cash, why not rent a spare room or look for accommodation in exchange for work?
